13U News

We had a very successful tryout this year with 11 players wanting to return and 10 more wanting to make the team.  Overall I chose 13 players that I feel have the chemistry, the skills, and parents that are going to allow us to have a very fun 2009 baseball season.  13 may seem like a large number to take for a team, but the kids will find out that as they get older and older, squad sizes get larger and larger and that spots must be earned and roles acquired.  Another reason for a 13-man roster is to accommodate for more pitching.  We will have more pitching this year, picking up 3 good pitchers from the tryouts and getting our main pitchers back.  I also feel we added to our depth in utility players making the rotation of players and lineup changes much easier.  I have also decided that we are going to be doing something different this year since many are in winter sports, and that is to practice 2-3 times per week in the fall, then to do private 1on1 or 1on2 lessons in the winter to best accommodate around winter schedules.   Remember, that practices, whether in the fall or winter are mandatory unless you are playing another sport or doing another activity that conflicts.  I am pushing for a successful season for the kids.  This is the last "hoo-rah" for the players so we are going to make it a memorable one.   Fall fundraisers are going to be starting, first with an enchilada sale.  More information will be posted as soon as I hear about it.  Other than that, I look forward to a great season.

Our Quad City Heat went 5-1 this past weekend, taking the championship in the Gold Bracket at the Iowa USSSA AA State tournament.  Their only loss was to the K-Zone Team 3-2 in extra innings who were the eventual overall champions.  Our 13 year old boys played great all weekend allowing only 11 runs to score against them in 6 games of play.  They used Dusty for 7 innings against the K-Zone so that was the only game he was able to pitch in all weekend and Marcus was unavailable for the weekend and yet our boys came out with the second best record in the tournament and showed where they belonged, plowing through teams in the gold bracket.  This is a remarkable accomplishment for the Heat and for this team.  From last years 44-14 team, we had only 3 players return to the team this year.  And after our smaller tryouts, we had to recruit or find players just to make a team but it ended up being a success with our overall record being 32 wins and 13 losses, with many of those losses being just a one run game.  This team is going to end their fantastic year hopefully with a bang at the WBSA Season Finale on July 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th.
